What is FSSAI?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statue related to food safety and regulation in India

Who needs FSSAI licence in India?

Every food business operator involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License.

Which products need FSSAI Licence?

The following individuals or entities must obtain FSSAI Registration or License as per the rules and regulation of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006:

  • All types of Food Manufacturer.
  • Food Packaging unit.
  • Food Storage unit.
  • Wholesale food business operators.
  • Food Traders.
  • Online Food Business Operator.

What is the validity of FSSAI licence?

A Registration or license granted under these Regulations shall be valid and subsisting, unless otherwise specified, for a period of 1 to 5 years as chosen by the Food Business Operator, from the date of issue of registration or license subject to remittance of fee applicable for the period and compliance with all conditions of license.

Can I sell food items without FSSAI licence?

No. To ensure safe and wholesome food for human consumption, Section 31(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, requires licenses from FSSAI for every food business set up. According to the size and nature of the company, FSSAI registration or Licence could be required.

How to add products to existing FSSAI License?

To modify the existing FSSAI license FBOs(Food Business Operator)need to submit an online application through the online mode on Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) and possess a valid receipt of the application having a seventeen-digit application reference number.

What does IEC (Import Export Code) means?

An Importer -Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which is mandatory for export from India or Import to India. No export or import shall be made by any person without obtaining an IEC unless specifically exempted.

What is eligibility criteria for IEC?

Importers- Importers who are looking to import goods into India are required to register for IEC. The importers also need to quote the IE Code while clearing the customs. In addition to this, banks require the IE code of the business/ individual while sending money abroad.

Exporters- Exporters who are looking to export goods from India are required to register for IEC. The exporters also need to quote the IE Code while sending shipments. In addition to this, banks require the IE code of the business/ individual while receiving money from abroad.

Proprietors- It is not necessary to incorporate a company in order to obtain an IE Code in your name, individual proprietors of a business can also obtain an IE code.

When and where the requirement of IEC arise

IEC is required for clearing of shipment. For banking transactions.

It is required for obtaining food licence and APEDA licence.

When Exporter wants to avail export subsidiary then export code need to be disclosed to the export council.

List of conditions when IEC is not required?

Import Export Code (IEC) isn't required to be taken in case the goods exported or imported is for personal purposes and isn't used for any commercial purpose. Export/ Import done by the Government of India Departments and Ministries, Notified Charitable institutions need not require getting Import Export Code

How much time is involved in issue of Import Export Code?

It is fairly easy to obtain IEC code from the DGFT within a period of 10 to 15 days after submitting the application. There isn't any need to provide proof of any export or import for getting IEC code.

What fee is payable for IEC?

As per the latest notification, IEC code Application fees is Rs 500/- which can be paid online through e-wallets/Net Banking/Credit or Debit Cards

How IEC registration can be cancelled?

Whenever any IEC holder decides to surrender his IEC License, he can do so by filing an online request for surrender of IEC on the official website of DGFT. The business dealer can submit the documents that are required for the surrender of IEC together with the application for registration of IEC.

On what grounds can IEC be deactivated?

If the IEC holder fails to update their IEC before the end of the Month of June, the IEC shall be deactivated and export /import transactions cannot be taken up against the given IEC. However, if the IEC holder wishes to re-activate the IEC, the applicant may use the steps mentioned for updating the IEC.

What documents are required for IEC registration?

For IEC Code Registration, the following documents are required:
Individual's or Firm's or Company's copy of PAN Card.
Individual's voter id or Aadhar card or passport copy.
Individual's or company's or firm's cancel cheque copies of current bank accounts.
Copy of Rent Agreement or Electricity Bill Copy of the premise.
A self-addressed envelope for delivery of IEC certificate by registered post.
